Heritage services for schools
The Heritage and Local Studies Centre offers a range of educational services to schools, colleges and community groups. These include resource box loans, themed class sessions, local history talks and exhibitions, and project advice. For information relating to the cost of services please contact [email protected].
Resource box loans
A range of topic boxes are available to hire for 1-3 week loans. These combine photographic material, notes, period / replica artefacts and costume pieces. For a list of current topics and to request a quote for our services please contact [email protected].
Themed class sessions
Merton Heritage Service offers a range of themed class sessions for local schools. These are chiefly aimed at Primary Schools and have been designed to meet curriculum needs.
Each session includes:
- An introductory talk
- Q & A
- Activities and / or worksheets that enable children to take a closer look at a range of historic source materials and the opportunity to handle period artefacts.
- Sessions have been designed to stimulate enquiry, develop historical skills, indicate chronology and show change over time.
The "My First Museum Visit" is aimed at younger children and combines a range of simple activities – dressing up, brass rubbing, historic games and object handling.

Local history exhibitions

Project advice and support
Teachers can book class sessions with the Heritage Service as preparation for classroom work or class visits. All sessions can take place at Merton Heritage Centre and will include guidance on source materials, local contacts, heritage sites and the availability of artefacts for classroom use.
