Who next…? A guide to children authors

Who Next...? A guide to children’s authors is an interactive online tool designed to help parents, teachers and librarians in schools and public libraries to encourage children and young people to read more widely, by suggesting authors they might enjoy. The tool can be used to guide children who have already enjoyed stories by one writer to find others who write in a similar way.

For each of the authors listed, other authors who write in a similar style are suggested. By moving from one entry to another, young readers can expand the number of writers they enjoy. Older children can also use the guide themselves.

The links that have been made between authors are based on genre and theme, and also of styles of writing, or similar aspects of characterisation and settings. The most popular titles by each author are listed and the information is arranged in four age groups: 5-7, 8-11, 12-14 and 14+. Who Next ...? also suggests suitable titles for dyslexic and reluctant readers.

Reading Eggs

Reading Eggs is an online programme that’s designed to help children learn how to read. You can now access it for free via Merton Library Service.

Reading eggs supports each child’s learning by offering individual, one-on-one lessons. The online lessons allow your child to progress at their own rate, gradually building their reading confidence and rewarding them at every step of the way.

There are 4 areas in Reading Eggs:

  • Fast Phonics (for ages 4-7) is designed for students who are learning to read using systematic synthetic phonics as the key strategy, helping them to sound out words. Children explore peaks, full of fun activities and decodable reading books, along with the yeti and friends.
  • Reading eggs (for ages 4-7) makes learning to read interesting and engaging for kids, with great online reading games and activities. Children love the games, songs, golden eggs and other rewards which, along with feeling proud of their reading, really motivate children to keep exploring and learning.
  • Reading Eggspress (for ages 6-13) is designed for the older readers and provides them with a unique and effective learning environment where they can improve their English language and comprehension skills in a way that is both exciting and relevant.
  • The Library (for ages 4-13) includes over 2500 online books for children of all reading levels.
