After attending the first missionary school for Chinese in the US, they built a colony like no other before with the help of Chinese and local politicians.
Their story of struggle and resilience weaves together the Chinese Exclusion Act, the fall of the Qing dynasty, the Mexican Revolution, and the Sino-Japanese war.
Hugo Wong grew up in Paris and Mexico and lived in China for 15 years starting from the mid 1990's.
